MAJ Fortier
Biography
“Art guides, inspires, and captures the imagination. It has the ability to soothe our thoughts and fuel our dreams. It has the power to stimulate our consciousness and invigorate our minds. It creates a unifying bond that often gives rise to a new perspective.” – Marc André Jacques Fortier
Born on April 19, 1961, in the Province of Québec, Fortier expresses his thoughts through his own visual language. He inherited curiosity, character, and a desire to excel from his father, a pragmatic notary, and his mother, an intellectual, writer, and drama teacher. Influenced by European and North American culture, theatrical comedy, German expressionism, surrealism, and the counterculture central to the Pop Art movement, he developed a unique artistic style.
Fortier’s work is figurative, evocative, energetic, positive, and colorful, reflecting a constant concern for aesthetics. Playful and often ironic, his art challenges appearances and critiques certain human behaviors in society. A disciplined, methodical, and passionate self-taught artist, Fortier has been working with proven and durable mediums for over 38 years. Today, his signature can be found on some of the most important monumental sculptures in and around Montreal, Quebec.
